THE WAY OF THE CROSS
A reflective Via Dolorosa walk
by John Hay, Jr. (West Morris Street FMC, Indianapolis, IN)

The Stations, or Way of the Cross, is an ancient method of meditating upon Christ's Suffering and Death. Trace the path of Jesus from His condemnation to His body being laid in a tomb. Bring your senses, and most of all your heart, and walk the Way of the Cross. Take time to read, reflect, pray, and/or sing. Reflect on what Jesus' journey to the cross means for you, for all.

STATION ELEVEN: Jesus speaks to His sorrowful Mother

Scripture: "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, 'Dear woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple took her into his home." John 19:25-

Reflection: Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, sees his mother Mary. Oceans of grief deluge their hearts as they look upon each other. The Angel's prophecy to Mary is fulfilled: "Sorrow will pierce your own heart!" Yet even from the cross Jesus ministers to those he loves.

Prayer: O Jesus, bathe my sinful soul in a sea of true sorrow for my past offenses. I grieve at all I have lost-and all You have lost for my sake-even as I accept the healing grace You give. Amen.

Song:
Upon the cross of Jesus
Mine eyes at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart with tears
Two wonders I confess--
The wonders of redeeming love
And my unworthiness.
